Taj Falaknuma Palace. Epitome of luxury.
The horse drawn carriage that drives you uphill into the Taj Falaknuma Palace, transports one straight into fantasy land. What looks like a European mansion from a distance, turns out to be a magnificent palace hotel. The view is nothing short of spectacular, and as I realized after my visit, the experience was spectacular too.
The Falaknuma experience begins with a fabulous ceremonial welcome when one ascends the Grand staircase. This prepares me to expect a wonderful time at The Taj. I cannot help but admire the grandeur of this 19th century palace that epitomizes royalty at its best.
Taj Falaknuma – The restoration
The Taj Falaknuma is a legendary palace hotel, residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad, bought in 1897 for 20 lack rupees. The palace was not open to the public till its restoration in 2010, until which it was a private property. Taken over by the Taj Group in 1995, renovated and restored under the able guidance of Princess Esra, The Falaknuma threw open its doors in 2010 to resounding applause. Ensconced atop a hill in Hyderabad, the hotel has sixty exquisitely done up rooms, overlooking the city of pearls.
The rooms are furnished with handwoven tapestry and French brocade. Spread over 32 acres of land, the perfectly manicured lawns and the surrounding woods house an array of birds and butterflies.
Taj Falaknuma – The Experience
The Falaknuma, is famous for the world’s longest dining table that can seat 101 guests. The dining hall is embellished with Belgian chandeliers, one of which has 42 branches. Its halls boast of amazing acoustics, which allow a person to hear the conversation going on at the other end of the table. The intricately carved ceiling and the rosewood furniture make the hall stunning.
The Gol Bungalow is a design marvel. It has a mosaic glass ceiling that took six months to be restored. The view of the illuminated city by night, is a sight to behold.
The luxury hotel has an astonishing Imperial Library which holds 5900 books, including some original editions. It also has the largest collection of the Holy Quran. The Billiards room at Falaknuma Palace has a Burroughes and Watts table from The United Kingdom. The felt top of the table has been replaced though the rest of it has been restored.
Restaurants such as Celeste and Adaa offer great gastronomic experiences. The Durbar Hall and Board Room are glorious venues for conferences and events. The Taj promises impeccable service and fine dining is available at both venues.
Being at The Taj Falaknuma is an enchanting experience. Undoubtedly it is the best heritage hotel in the world. The planning and restoration of the palace are meticulous. It is where beautiful dreams come true and one is treated like royalty. The visit does turn out to be an unforgettable memory.
